Mwamba at the 2025 OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains

posted by Eduard Cornew

Mwamba recently participated in the OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains 2025, an annual gathering that convenes policymakers, investors, industry leaders, and civil society to shape the future of responsible sourcing. Ed Cornew, (Co-Founder, President & CFO) attended the Forum together with Claudio Lorimer, Mwamba’s Jewelry Advisor, who is helping the company connect responsibly produced gold to upstream jewelry buyers.

Key Takeaways from the Forum

The Forum brought rich dialogue on the strategic importance of aligning mining operations with global sustainability frameworks. Discussions highlighted how:

  • Transparency and traceability are becoming foundational to global supply chains.
  • Private equity investors are embedding ESG criteria more deeply into capital allocation.
  • On-the-ground due diligence at mine sites remains critical to ensure credible, responsible sourcing.

Responsible sourcing was consistently emphasized as no longer optional, but essential.

Another central focus on one of the days was on the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) sector. Often overlooked, ASM was recognized both for its challenges and its potential to meet the growing demand for critical minerals and strategic minerals alike. Sessions explored:

  • Cooperative models as pathways to collective resilience and market access.
  • Access to finance as a critical enabler for formalization and growth.
  • The promise of centralized, transparent processing systems in building trust and enabling responsible ASM participation in global supply chains.

Mwamba’s Approach

Mwamba’s participation underscored the company’s pioneering work in Tanzania, where we operate a centralized, mercury-free gold Carbon-in-Pulp processing facility for artisanal and small-scale gold miners. Earlier this year, the World Gold Council, through their March Report on The Role of Gold Processing Plants in Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining, recognized Mwamba as one of only two global case studies demonstrating how such models can successfully deliver responsible, scalable impact in the sector.

With every step forward, Mwamba demonstrates that ASM can and will be part of a responsible, traceable global gold supply chain.
