In June 2024, our team had the privilege of attending and participating in the planetGOLD Global Forum on Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM), held in Manila, Philippines. This pivotal global gathering brought together industry leaders, governments, civil society, and technical experts to explore sustainable solutions for the future of artisanal and small-scale gold mining.
Representing Mwamba, Eduard Cornew, our Co-Founder and President, joined a high-level panel discussion titled “Cooperation Models between Large-Scale Mining and ASM.” In his presentation, Ed shared how Mwamba’s vertically integrated and optimized ASGM supply chain is enabling Tanzanian miners to transition toward safer, more modern mining practices.
A Platform for Shared Solutions
The forum marked a special milestone for Mwamba—four years since we were first invited to serve as a private sector representative of the planetGOLD Programme Advisory Group. Since then, we’ve remained committed to the shared mission of making ASGM cleaner, safer, and more profitable.
Key insights from Mwamba’s contribution to the panel include:
- Tanzania’s Mining Act of 2010 created a regulatory framework that empowered ASGM communities to engage in the formal gold mining sector and claim a meaningful share of national gold production.
- Pragmatic collaboration between large-scale mining companies and ASGM operations can unlock new opportunities for mutual growth through shared access to access to land, expertise, and formal investment.
- Mwamba’s co-development model enables partner mines to access mercury-free processing technology and safer, more efficient mechanized mining systems, boosting productivity while reducing environmental and health risks.
